AFOs (Callipers) for Foot & Ankle Conditions
Ankle-Foot Orthoses and Callipers are designed to protect and correct foot, ankle and lower leg deformity.
An Ankle-Foot Orthosis (AFO) is an externally fitted device, which is designed to protect, support, prevent or correct deformity of the foot, ankle and/or lower leg. AFOs are sometimes referred to as AFO Shoes, Callipers, AFO Braces or Splints, and are commonly used to provide support for foot drop or ankle instability. AFOs can also provide support for people who have previously had a stroke, or live with conditions such as:
- Spina Bifida
- Cerebral Palsy
- Lou Gehrig’s Disease
- Multiple Sclerosis
At Perth Surgical Shoemakers, we supply ready-made Carbon Fibre Splint AFOs, ready-made Polypropylene Splint AFOs and custom-made AFOs. The type of AFO required depends on the deformity and the degree of function you have in your foot, while some may require a flexible AFO and others a more fixed solution tailored to their orthopaedic condition.
Our certified pedorthists and surgical shoemakers can recommend a suitable AFO to help provide relief and support for a range of foot and ankle conditions, including:
- Drop Foot (due to stroke or nerve damage)
- Chronic Lateral Instabilities (supination)
- Posterior Tibial Tendon Dysfunction (pronation)
- Talo-Calcaneal Valgus and Equinus
- Charcot Foot Deformity
- Charcot-Marie-Tooth Disease
Dictus Bands for Mild Drop Foot
For people who have a mild foot drop condition, a dictus band device can be used in place of an AFO. Dictus bands raise the foot after toe-off, which largely eliminates everyday obstacles such as doorsteps, carpets, pavements and other barriers.
The main advantages of using dictus bands are:
- Designed to be discreet and comfortable
- Mount on any lace-up shoe
- Added flexibility, as the band uses a recoil and stretch action with the latex elastic band and hook
- Helps raise the foot after toe-off and reduces the risk of tripping
- Cleans easily with just a damp cloth
- Available in adult and child sizes
Please note that the dictus band also comes with a plastic hook which can be inserted between the laces/velcro fastening of shoes. We can also permanently stitch the plastic hook to the footwear for ease of use.
